Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have revealed new details in the murder of 20-year-old Rita Waeni.

On Monday two new suspects were arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts. The Nigerian suspects were different from the man captured on CCTV camera collecting keys to a short-stay accommodation space in Roysambu where Waeni was murdered.

While making his submissions in court, Benjamin Wangila from Kasarani DCI, a detective in a sworn affidavit revealed that the two suspects lived in Ndenderu, Kiambu County where they were arrested on Sunday.

He revealed that the two lived close to where Waeni's head was found dumped.

The detective also told the court that the two were in the country illegally since their passports had expired. The man earlier arrested by police was attempting to escape using a fake passport.

Additionally, the suspect captured on CCTV had a light skin tone, which was the antithesis of the persons arraigned in court.

Meanwhile, during the arrest, the detectives seized a few items as evidence. Detectives recovered a hatchet, butcher's knife, three laptops, six mobile phones, a Kenyan national identity card, and 10 sim cards among other items.

One of the suspects revealed that he bought the item from an e-commerce platform for self-defense.

Following the new developments, Wangila wants to retrieve call data records from the service provider to determine whether the two were involved in the murder.

Additionally, the detective also sought orders to detain the duo for eight days at the Kasarani Police Station as investigations continued.

He argued that the two were a flight risk and should be placed under police supervision. Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi granted the request and the suspects will be held until January 31.

Notably, Waeni's death shocked the country due to the inhumane and gruesome murder. Her body was cut into pieces and dumped in a garbage bin.

When she was murdered, Waeni was in the company of a Nigerian national who is suspected to have killed her on Sunday last week at the rental house before fleeing with her head which was recovered on Sunday.

The parents of the 20-year-old student revealed that the suspect had demanded Ksh500,000 to release their daughter but upon failure to meet the demand, the man killed her.
