At the time, detectives from Massachusetts State Police revealed that the suspect flew to Nairobi after committing the crime.

The US police obtained an arrest warrant for the 40-year-old and appealed to Kenyan authorities to locate and extradite him.

The man, who has been on the run for three months, was placed on the Interpol Red Notice.

A red notice is a request to all law enforcement officers globally to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or any legal action.

Following his arrest, police officers privy to the matter revealed to the press that they were waiting for assistance from the US police to help in establishing the profile of the man in custody.

If the suspect is positively identified, the Kenyan authorities will commence the extradition process.

In November last year, US police established that the car found in the US parking lot belonged to the suspect.

Further, Mbitu's body had visible knife wounds on the neck, face and chest area. Following the incident, the police released photos of the suspect to the public with the view of getting citizens to help authorities find him.

Meanwhile, Mbitu's family called on police to expedite investigations for justice to be served. The victim's mother, at the time, revealed that her daughter was set to break up with the suspect before the incident occurred.
