"KIWASCO Headquarters was officially opened by Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH, the prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya (2008-2013) on February 5, 2024," read the plaque at the entrance.

Towards the end of last year, Governor Nyong'o revealed that the building was 98 per cent complete in November.

The building towers over shorter residential structures in the neighbourhoods with a white exterior and sky-blue windowpanes.

Inside, the building has white walls, smooth tiles and recessed lighting in the ceiling.

The water company was founded in 2001 and officially began operations in July 2003.

It was tasked with providing adequate clean potable water and collecting, treating, and disposing of sewerage (wastewater) within the jurisdiction of Kisumu City.

"Our water treatment capacity is at 80,000 cubic meters per day. The Dunga treatment plant has a capacity of 44,000 cubic while Kajulu has 36,000 cubic per day. Currently, we operate under the philosophy of water production 40-60% ratios of Dunga and Kajulu (Pumping and Gravity respectively)," reads a description of the company on its website.

"Our Non-Revenue Water stands at 36% according to WASREB report 2019/2020 with a collection efficiency of 84%. Water supply coverage improved from 82% in 2019 to 83% by 2020 while sewer stands at 18%."
