This meeting comes a few days later after the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made a call to Uhuru on Saturday, discussing the same issue of East Africa’s leadership.

In a statement issued by the Department of State, Blinken emphasised that Kenya was playing a significant role in facilitating peace operations between East African countries.

"The Secretary emphasized the valuable role of regional leaders in assisting the DRC and Rwanda in implementing commitments made in their discussions with Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines and other senior U.S. officials," read part of the statement.

Further, the former President was lauded for doing a commendable job in restoring peace, particularly with the growing tensions in DRC Congo.

Recently, DRC and Rwanda have failed to agree on matters security with Rwanda being accused of hosting and funding M23 rebels.

Rwanda in their response, however, has denied any association with the rebels terming the accusations as baseless.

Additionally, Burundi closed its border with Rwanda without issuing prior notice, a matter that has exacerbated the East Africa tensions.

Currently, Uhuru Kenyatta serves as the East African Countries Peace Facilitator, a role he acquired after retiring as Kenya’s president.

With this position, the former President will be expected to push for reconciliation efforts between the countries with the diplomatic tiffs.
