The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) led a multiagency unit in conducting a joint operation at Ruaka, in Kiambu County on Wednesday night, February 7.

During the joint operations coordinated alongside officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and National Police Service (NPS), NACADA officials seized 750 litres of pure ethanol from the area.

Acting on an intelligence tipoff, the team also recovered 40 empty drums with a capacity of 250 litres each.

The officials suspected the empty containers contained ethanol which had already been ferried for packaging.

The crackdown follows a recent incident in Kirinyaga County where a section of residents tragically lost their lives while others are still receiving treatment after consuming alleged illicit alcohol.

Following the raid, the government authority tasked with battling incidents of alcohol abuse clarified that it will heighten sporadic crackdowns across the country

"NACADA continues to work closely with the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and other law enforcement agencies to intensify the crackdown on substandard, illicit, and counterfeit alcohol to safeguard the public from such harmful products," NACADA stated.

NACADA has also issued a caution on drinking illicit alcohol that poses health risks and could have dangerous consequences.

"Counterfeit or illegally produced alcohol can lead to blindness and even death," the government agency further warned.

With this, they have appealed to members of the public to share any information that they may have regarding the illegal manufacturing, distribution, or sale of any suspicious alcohol or other forms of drugs to the authorities.

"The information can also be shared with us through our Toll-Free line 1192 which is available for 24 hours," said NACADA.
