Four undercover police officers were on Tuesday, February 20, arrested in Githurai following a multi-agency operation involving detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and National Police Service (NPS).

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the detectives stormed into the estate after they were tipped off over a smuggling and trafficking operation involving Ethiopians.

Police commenced investigations into the smuggling ring to ascertain how 37 Ethiopians, who were found sleeping in one house in the Kizito area, arrived in Kenya.

An extended search was also conducted on the adjacent plot whereby two men fled from the scene minutes after the police raid.

The officers pursued the duo who attempted to evade capture by leaping over a perimeter wall.

Their efforts to escape, however, proved futile as the detectives caught up with the suspects and apprehended them. The two also sustained injuries on their ankles.

After a brief interrogation, the officers established that the suspects were police officers attached to Githurai and Starehe police stations who claimed to be undercover and were conducting an operation to trace the foreigners.

Police seized Beretta and Czeska pistols from the suspects to assist in the investigations.

Moments later, a police vehicle arrived at the scene with two handcuffed Ethiopians on board who were reportedly arrested by police from Starehe Police Station for entering the country illegally.

DCI detectives, who were already at the scene, nonetheless, apprehended the two Starehe cops who came onboard the vehicle plus the two others found at the crime scene on suspicion of operating in an area outside their jurisdiction without the knowledge of their commanders.

The four cops were taken into custody at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road for interrogation.

"Also at the scene was another motor vehicle, Nissan registration number (withheld), white in colour, belonging to one of the officers. All vehicles have been detained at Mwihoko police station," read part of the police report.

Police officers have since launched a manhunt for the apartment's landlord.
