A woman from Karaba, Kirinyaga County was on Wednesday found dead inside a police station in Embu County.
The 24-year-old woman, according to reports, had been arrested after a quarrel with her husband at a local joint located at the border of the two counties.
Reports indicate that the couple was fighting after the man found his wife at the local joint.
A confrontation ensued, attracting the attention of revellers since the couple was in possession of crude weapons.
The joint's owner would then catch wind of the situation, after which, he called the police to quell the situation and prevent the couple from harming each other.
Police officers arrested the two and held them in separate cells. However, moments later, the woman was found dead.
Police are however investigating the incident to determine the actual cause of death.
The husband has since stated that his wife's death came as a shock to him speculating that his wife may have been tortured in the cell leading to her untimely death.
Mwea Sub-County Police Commander Crispinus Ogutu while addressing the press dismissed the claims emphasising that the deceased took her own life.
"The woman could have died by suicide, possibly under the influence of alcohol as she was drunk when she was arrested. In fact, police officers were called by a member of public," the Police Commander added.
As her husband awaits the autopsy results, he has called for thorough investigations into the death which has left residents in shock.
Recently, a similar incident involving a man in custody after being charged with robbery with violence charges was reported in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
The man is said to have collapsed and died at night in police custody.
His family, however, complained that their kin was not ill in the months leading to his death. They, therefore, called for prompt investigations into the matter.
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) waded into the matter and launched investigations into the mysterious death.
