Residents of Kimbo, Ruiru, Nairobi County, and the family of a man who died while in police custody on the night of Saturday, January 20 are demanding justice to be served amid concerns over what they believe to be possible foul play.
According to reports, the suspect collapsed abruptly while in the cell leading to questions about what might caused his death, especially since he was not ailing at the time of his passing.
Reports also indicate that the deceased appeared to be doing okay until he fell prompting several of his cellmates to immediately raise the alarm to police officers who subsequently transported him to the hospital.
However, the suspect was pronounced dead on arrival at the Ruiru Level Four Hospital.
By the time of publishing this article, the cause of death was not clear. The police alongside the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) were conducting investigations into the incident.
It is reported that the suspect was awaiting arraignment in court after being booked in for an appearance.
The suspect had been arrested and was waiting to be charged with a case of robbery with violence.
Despite the IPOA’s involvement in the investigations, they are yet to release a statement on the incident.
The suspect’s body has been transported to the City Mortuary awaiting an autopsy analysis to determine the cause of death.
In a case in May 2023, a man passed away in a Buruburu police station several hours after being arrested.
It was reported that the man was allegedly beaten by police officers, during which he sustained serious injuries.
However, the claims were not substantiated as information on the case is yet to be released.
