15 individuals living or dealing with Mombasa government-owned houses have been ordered to vacate the property.
The County Government of Mombasa, through a Gazette Notice dated February 13 but released on Saturday, declared the sub-leases of the land null and void.
The devolved unit further cautioned the public not to fall prey to unscrupulous traders who might attempt to sell them the parcels.
"Pursuant to cancellation of the sub-leases by Mombasa County Land Formalization and Regularization Committee on County Government Housing Estates, the following sub-leases are declared invalid and hence being brought to the attention of the public not to have any transactions on them," read the notice in part.
The notice signed by County Secretary Jeizan Faruk cited that the parcels range between 0.023 acres and 0.3 acres.
The order comes a week after Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga directed individuals residing in government houses in six Nairobi Estate to vacate.
Hinga wrote a letter to the affected individuals residing in Jogoo Road Phase I & II, Jamaa, Mbotela, Ahero, and Mawenzi Garden asking them to leave before April 30.
He explained that the land was to be used in the Affordable Housing project, which forms President William Ruto's legacy project that has since employed 130,000 individuals according to the Head of State.
"As you are aware, the Government is implementing the Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which is part of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Pursuant to this, several old estates have been identified for redevelopment in order to increase rental stock, avail houses for sale to citizens at affordable rates, and create job opportunities for the youth," he directed.
"In line with this, several Government Estates in the Eastlands area have been identified and earmarked for redevelopment. These include Jogoo Road Phase I & II, Jamaa, Mbotela, Ahero, and Mawenzi Gardens. To pave the way for their redevelopment, there is a need to vacate all tenants residing in these Government estates immediately."
Ruto aims to deliver over 200,000 affordable units every year to meet the high demand for housing infrastructure by Kenyans.
As of August last year, the construction of 36,092 units had already taken off while the affordable Buxton Estate housing project, initiated under Uhuru Kenyatta's administration, was handed over to buyers.
