On Tuesday, March 5, the government, through the National Museums of Kenya, announced the temporary closure of the Nairobi National Museum Galleries.

In a notice by the Museums of Kenya, the closure would be done to allow maintenance services at the historical museum.

According to the notice, the museum will be closed from Monday, March 11, to Thursday, March 14, for fumigation purposes.

"Normal operations will resume on Friday, 15 March 2024, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm," the statement read in part.

However, the Nairobi Snake Park will remain operational for visitors who intend to tour at the usual operational time of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

"We apologize for any inconvenience caused. We look forward to providing the best experience for you at the Nairobi National," the notice further read.

Museums worldwide utilise fumigation services to eliminate pests from artworks, books, wooden objects, and other furniture.

The Nairobi National Museum aims to exhibit the country's rich heritage for educational and leisure purposes, offering visitors a range of shopping and dining facilities, as well as botanical gardens.

Hosting both temporary and permanent galleries, the Nairobi National Museum attracts learners and tourists alike.

Notable permanent galleries at the museum include the Cradle of Humankind Gallery, the Story of Mammals, the History of Kenya, the Cycles of Life Gallery, the Numismatic Exhibition, and the Asian African Heritage Exhibition Gallery.

Initially located at the present-day Nyayo House, the museum was relocated to a larger building in 1922, where the Nairobi Serena Hotel now stands.

In 2005, the city's national museum closed for three years for extensive modernisation and expansion. It reopened in June 2008 as the Nairobi National Museum.
