A police officer was killed in a hit-and-run accident by a speeding lorry during an inspection exercise at Brookside area in Kieni, Nyeri County.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the officer was part of a weighbridge team inspecting incoming and outgoing heavy-duty vehicles to enhance compliance with the axle load regulations.

Moments later, the team identified the driver of a lorry approaching the weighbridge, upon which they ordered him to halt for a routine inspection.

The driver, however, disobeyed the orders and declined to stop, prompting the officers to engage him in a speed chase.

The officers sped past the lorry, arrived at the Brookside area and parked their vehicles on the road to block the driver's path.

Not heeding their call, the lorry knocked down one of the officers who had alighted from the vehicle and was standing on the side of the road.

The lorry also rammed the rear of the vehicle and drove off.

Due to the impact, the officer died on the spot while his colleague, a police sergeant, sustained injuries on his right leg and right hand. He was rushed to Mathari Mission Hospital for medical treatment.

Officers attached to NaroMoru Police Station arrived at the scene for processing and documentation.

The deceased was moved to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination.

The motor vehicles belonging to the weighbridge team were damaged on the rear parts and were towed to NaroMoru Station pending inspection.

"Efforts are made to impound the lorry and apprehend the driver," the police report read in part.
