Moi University has announced the suspension of all academic trips until after the Easter holidays following an accident involving a bus carrying 65 students.
The decision came mere hours after the incident occurred at Kimende on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway on Wednesday, March 27, morning.
Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey relayed the directive via the university's official social media platform, expressing gratitude that there were no casualties or fatalities resulting from the accident.
"This morning at around 9.50 a.m., our University Bus KCK 583U with 65 students on board, was involved in a non-fatal traffic accident at Kimende area on the Nakuru – Nairobi Highway while on an Academic Trip with students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Kiswahili. I am relieved to inform you that there were no casualties or fatalities, and all students are safe. A bus has been dispatched to bring them back to Main Campus," stated Kosgey.
Lari Sub-County Deputy Police Commander Francis Njomo confirmed that 12 students sustained injuries and were taken to Orthodox Hospital in Kimende town for treatment.
Njomo provided details on the accident, explaining that the driver lost control for unspecified reasons, causing the bus to veer off the road and into a ditch.
Following the accident, police have initiated investigations into its cause, while injured students are receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.
The wreckage of the university bus has been towed to Lari police station as authorities continue their inquiries into the incident.
The statement further urged caution among drivers and road users during the Easter Holidays, reiterating the university's commitment to student safety.
The incident follows a similar tragedy involving a Kenyatta University bus in Voi, Taita Taveta County, just two weeks prior. In that accident, 11 students lost their lives, with several others sustaining injuries.
These accidents have prompted heightened concern over road safety, with the Ministry of Transport announcing new measures to address the issue.
