Police have launched a manhunt for a driver who was caught carrying 31 high school students in a 14-seater matatu in Meru County.

In a statement by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) dated Saturday, March 30, it was revealed that the discovery was made during the ongoing safety enforcement on the roads.

NTSA revealed that the driver fled the scene after the vehicle was stopped.

According to the Authority, the students had to be placed in other vehicles to transport them to school.

"A 14-seater PSV was found carrying 31 students from Tharaka Nithi County. The driver managed to escape and efforts are underway to apprehend him. Alternative transport arrangements were made for the learners.

"The vehicle has been towed to the police station for further action," read the statement in part.

NTSA added that it would collaborate with the police to ensure that the driver is brought to book even as they warned that those who flaunt traffic rules would be arrested.

On the other hand, schools were also cautioned to be careful when organising transportation for their students.

"Drivers and school management entrusted with the safety of our children must understand their responsibility," NTSA added.

Notably, the Meru incident comes a day after NTSA released requirements that bus drivers should have while on the road.

They include a valid Road Service Licence (RSL), a valid inspection certificate, a functional speed limiter, a requisite DL class endorsement and a valid PSV badge.
