Baringo County Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were on Tuesday, April 2, involved in a physical altercation with the Assembly Speaker over leadership changes.

According to Assembly Speaker Vincent Kemboi, some of the leaders charged at him to grab communication documents during the announcement of the new leaders.

“As I was reading the communication from both John Taurus and from the UDA Party, members from both camps charged at the speakers and attempted to snatch the letters,” Kemboi noted.

Urging the UDA Party to address internal conflicts, the Speaker noted that the party members submitted two conflicting communications to the Assembly, regarding leadership changes.

“The first communication came from John Tarus, who is the MCA for Sacho Ward and had written to the Speaker, informing me that they had a meeting on March 20, 2024, and made changes to the leadership of the Majority Party,” the Speaker noted.

In the communication, the first faction stated that the Majority leader was to be Kennedy Kiprono, deputised by David Sitoyi, and the Majority Whip John Tarus, deputised by Evelyn Korir.

According to the second faction, the Majority leader remained to be Lawi Kipchumba Talum, deputised by Josphat Akuro. Arnest Kibet Tarus is the current Majority Chief Whip, deputised by Purity Talum.

“I also received an email from the Secretary General of UDA informing me that the affirmation of Baringo County Assembly confirms that there have been no changes in the Majority party leadership in Baringo County Assembly,” he added.

The Speaker further confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken against the MCAs involved in the altercation, through the Powers and Privileges Committee of the Baringo County Assembly.

In a similar incident in February, Laikipia County Assembly MCAs were involved in a physical fight after opposing camps disagreed on the Outsting of Minority leader Sammy Lekopien Parletto.

The MCAs supporting the Minority leader argued that the notice was read without prior communication.

In the video circulating online, the leaders could be seen throwing objects at each other. Some were also captured pushing and shoving each other.
