Dedan Kimathi University students will be receiving Ksh180 each after President William Ruto donated Ksh1 million intended to be channeled towards entertaining learners.
According to a memo dated Tuesday, April 9, the Director of Students' Welfare Esther Nthiga noted that following public participation conducted through Google Forms, the majority of the students opted to get a fair share from the donation.
The options provided in the form included; sharing the money equally among the students, organising a luncheon, or allocating it to the students’ bursary fund.
51 per cent of the students voted for the money to be shared equally. Another 36.5 per cent wanted the school to organise a luncheon while 35.5 per cent wanted the money to be channeled towards bursaries.
"Following the outcome of the public participation, it has been decided that every undergraduate student during the January-April 2024 semester, including students who are on internal attachment during the semester will be given Ksh.180," the memo read in part.
The school further directed all class representatives to inform students in various departments to collect the money from the Directorate.
“Kindly note that any uncollected money by Friday, April 19, will be channelled to the students’ bursary,” the school noted.
President William Ruto during a tour to the region visited the university. While addressing the students, the Head of State promised to donate money towards their entertainment.
"When I look at you I don't think you are hungry. You look like you are doing very well," Ruto joked with the students before continuing, "Just say you want something small, you are not hungry,” the President stated.
Ruto further directed leaders to divide the money among the students in any way deemed fit.
Kenyans online have however mockingly questioned the amount distributed to each student.
Others are questioning the students' decision to have the money divided among them, as opposed to organising a luncheon or party.
