The National Government on Sunday, April 14, revealed that the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) would reduce fuel prices later on Sunday.
This was communicated by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura who remarked that President William Ruto was keeping his promise to Kenyans to reduce the cost of living.
"A major announcement on the reduction of fuel prices shall be made today at 3:00 pm by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Agency (EPRA)! Truly, Kenya Kwanza led by President William Ruto is on delivering its promises," Mwaura stated.
EPRA reviews retail fuel prices on the 14th day of every month.
On March 14, EPRA reduced Super Petrol prices by Ksh7.21. Diesel was reduced by Ksh5.09 and Kerosene by Ksh4.49.
As such, fuel prices are currently retailing in Nairobi at Ksh199.15, Ksh190.38 and Ksh188.74 for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene respectively.
Following the announcement by Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, EPRA's April announcement will mean that fuel prices maintain a downward trajectory in 2024.
The last time EPRA increased fuel prices was in October 2023, when petrol retailed at Ksh217.36 per litre, diesel at Ksh205.47 and kerosene at Ksh204.46 per litre in Nairobi.
Since then, the price of fuel together with that of basic commodities has seen a significant reduction which has eased the cost of living.
On March 14, President William Ruto revealed that the reduction in prices was not a coincidence but a product of policies his administration had instituted.
"I want to tell you that even fuel prices will go down so relax,” he told Kenyans anxious over pump prices.
The reduction of pump prices is happening at a time when the Kenyan shilling has gained strength against the dollar which is the main currency for international trade.
