Abdalla Juma Seeks Court Order to Stop Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho From Vying in 2017 Election

A Nairobi resident has moved to court seeking an order to bar the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from gazetting Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho as an aspirant in the August 8 General Election.

The petitioner identified as Abdalla Juma, wants Joho barred from the Mombasa gubernatorial race over his academic qualifications.

He argues that the Governor obtained his degree fraudulently hence, should not be allowed to defend his seat.

Juma wants the IEBC to disregard Joho's degree claiming that his credentials do not meet the Constitutional threshold for a gubernatorial aspirant.

Last month, Governor Joho proudly admitted that he scored a D- in secondary school insisting that he was proud of his performance.

He added that he still had a vision of becoming Kenya’s President in 2022 despite his academic performance.

The governor announced his results after he was summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to be grilled over allegations of forging his KCSE result slip.

Controversy arose following questions on how the ODM deputy leader was admitted at the University of Nairobi (UoN) having scored a D-.
