After CORD Chaos, Police to Get New Weapons

Following Tuesday's demonstrations at Anniversary Towers by Opposition leaders calling for disbandment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the government has announced plans to procure more anti-riot gear for the police.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery Wednesday said the security department would be acquiring clubs, anti-riot water cannons as well as special clothes in May.

The CS expressed that anti-riot police would be effectively armed to deal with violent protests in the country ahead on 2017 elections.

Nkaissery, who was speaking when he received a new police helicopter from Italy, affirmed that part of the Sh3.8 Billion allocated to the security docket would go to equipping police to quell protests in the country.

“You will no longer throw stones at police during riots. We are bringing in anti-riot gear that will help them deal with rioters who we see are increasing,” he said.

The Retired Major General warned that the Jubilee administration would not tolerate any violent protests.

"Let us engage in responsible protests to send the message home. We will not tolerate violent protests at all," he said.

This move could be interpreted as the government bracing itself for protests even as the Opposition led by Raila Odinga announced that they would mobilise supporters to march to IEBC offices across the country pushing for the disbandment of the electoral body.
