Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto Calls for Changes to Allow the President Appoint MPs as Cabinet Secretaries

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has called for a change in the Constitution to allow the President appoint Members of Parliament (MPs) to be Cabinet Secretaries (CSs).

Speaking at a Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) meeting in Eldoret, Governor Ruto lamented that CSs in the Jubilee administration had been out of touch with the needs of the people.

Ruto stated that the officials appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta were only serving their appointing authority and not the problems facing the common citizens.

“It has become clear that ministers serving under the Jubilee coalition have lost touch with the needs of the people at the grass-roots. We need to re-engineer the systems to serve the people better,” Ruto stated.

He claimed that the Cabinet Secretaries were busy amassing wealth for themselves and the leaders of Jubilee at the expense of the taxpayers whom they are meant to serve.

The governor proposed that the change would enable vibrant elected leaders who understood the country's problems to roll out necessary development projects.

Governor Ruto was speaking in Nakuru town where he met over 1,700 CCM aspirants from 32 counties.

His comments come in the wake of allegations by Opposition Chief Raila Odinga that the CSs were engaging in politics in support of the Jubilee government.

Raila’s sentiments were, however, dismissed by Water and Irrigation Minister Eugene Wamalwa and his Devolution counterpart Mwangi Kiunjuri, who noted that they had a duty to inform the public about the progress of the government projects.

Kiunjuri insisted that they would not be intimidated by Odinga and would not bow to pressure on how they should do their job.
