British Government Will Not Lift Ban on Miraa - Nick Hailey

The British Government through its High Commissioner, Nick Hailey, on Saturday disappointed Kenya after announcing it would not lift the ban it imposed on Miraa.

Mr Hailey was speaking in Meru County, where he had gone to launch an electrical fence around the Imenti forest to ward off elephants that are said to have killed over 20 residents and destroyed crops.

Mr Hailey, however, reassured the residents of Meru who largely depend on the product as a source of income that the UK government would seek another alternative for them.

The British High commissioner further stated that his nation was awaiting a task report that was set up by President Kenyatta to review the ban.

During the event, Meru Deputy Governor Raphael Muriungi stated that miraa was the main source of income in the region and that farmers had suffered after the ban of the product in the UK.

“The ban is a big issue and since Britain is a friendly nation we would like it to rescue our farmers,” he stated

The commissioner also indicated that his Government had donated Sh1.5 billion towards the upcoming August General Election.

He further went ahead and urged Kenyans to avoid violence, rigging, and other electoral malpractices during and after the election.

Hailey also pleaded with all other stakeholders to embrace free, fair and peaceful elections.
