Central and Rift Valley Regions Lead in IEBC's First Week of Voter Registration

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s political strongholds have registered more votes compared to those of CORD leader Raila Odinga.

This is according to the interim report on voter registration that was released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday.

The report by the IEBC shows that a total 825,145 voters were registered in the first week, compared to the set target of 1.4 Million voters.

The Central Kenya region, which is considered Kenyatta’s political base, is leading with 139,876 new voters - a record 87 percent of the target set by the IEBC.

The Rift Valley region, home to Deputy President William Ruto, has 169,371 new voters – 60 percent of the set target.

On the other hand, the Nyanza and Western regions have lagged behind.

Odinga’s home ground of Nyanza has registered 95,945, a dismal 48 percent of the target set by the IEBC.

The former Prime Minister has in the last week led mobilisation campaigns in Luo Nyanza counties as well as in the Coastal region which has netted 95,681 (58 percent of the target).

The vote-rich Western region has only managed 43 percent of the set target, registering 75,193 new voters.

The expansive North Easter region, which is a political battleground, has registered 24,006 (92 percent of the set target).

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s Eastern region has also registered an impressive 127,580 new voters, 57 percent of what the IEBC had expected in its first week of registration.

The Eastern region is also home to some of the Jubilee strongholds of Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.

Nairobi has managed a low 48 percent of the IEBC target, getting 95,966 new voters.
