CORD Cancels IEBC Protests After This Police Announcement

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has cancelled its protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) scheduled for Monday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the coalition indicated that it had resolved to give room for further consultations on dialogue.

While making the announcement, Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama stated that the demonstrations would resume on Thursday if no solution is found by 9pm on Wednesday.

"We wanted solutions and we think the government should be given time.  They are engaging us at the highest levels," Muthama said.

The pronouncement by the Opposition came moments after Inspector General (IG) of Police Joseph Boinnet announced that CORD would be accorded maximum security during their protests.

The IG, however, directed CORD to provide information about:

1. The time the demonstrations will commence and end, giving the specific routes to be used.

2. An approximate number of demonstrators expected to participate.

3. The expected destinations and venue of public meetings if any.

4. The expected exit routes to be used after the demonstrations.
