Court Disappoints Kenya Airways Pilots

A Wednesday ruling by the Employment and Labour Relations Court dealt a blow to Kenya Airways pilots after it stopped them from holding the planned strike scheduled for Thursday.

KQ pilots through the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) had vowed to down their tools in protest of alleged mismanagement on the part of Kenya Airways.

However, Justice Nduma Nderi ruled that the industrial action should not proceed pending the hearing and determination of a petition by KQ.

“An interim order is hereby granted restraining the respondents (KALPA), its members, agents, servants and or sympathisers from calling, participating or engaging in any form of industrial action including strikes on account of an alleged mismanagement of the claimant (KQ) or otherwise and/or on account of the ongoing restructuring process pending the hearing of the application interpartes,” said Justice Nderi.

Judge Nderi said the case will be heard on May 9.

The national carrier’s pilots have expressed their displeasure with KQ top management and Chief Executive Officer Mbuvi Ngunze whom they wanted sent home.

The pilots have accused the airline’s board and leadership of gross mismanagement and fraud which has cost the airline billions of shillings.
