Court Orders Police to Release Terror Linked Parliamentary Staff

A Nairobi court has ordered that the parliamentary staff in police custody over suspected Al Shabaab links be released.

The court gave Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) an ultimatum of 2 days to either charge the suspect in court, or let him out of custody.

The suspect, Ali Abdul Majid Ahmed had been arrested on April 26th, following reports of being an Al Shabaab member.

It was alleged that Ahmed was using his job at the senate as cover while scouting the area grounds in preparation for an attack.

An earlier ruling by Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Benson Nzakyo had given ATPU permission to detain the suspect for 10 days to allow for investigations and set the date for the hearing of the case as Wednesday, 13th of May 2015.

A report was later released, linking the suspect to Roysambu attack and Pangani Police Station explosion.

In Wednesday's hearing of the case however, the court has denied APTU's request of 10 more days to conduct more investigations and ordered that the police use the information they have gathered to charge the suspect in court, or release him.
