Doctors Hit Government With 3 New Demands Before Ending Strike

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) on Thursday stated that they now want their negotiations with the government over the ongoing strike, done before the public eyes.

The medics said that this will ensure transparency in the talks that have previously been conducted in closed-door meetings.

KMPDU officials secondly noted that they do not want Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopha Mailu to be part of the negotiations.

The medics accused Mr Mailu of duping them into signing a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which had some crucial clauses missing.

They added that the CS was more concerned with protecting the private sector which only caters for one percent of the population.

"We no longer want to engage with Mailu. It is either he resigns or he is sacked. But we cannot negotiate with people who have partisan interests.

"It cannot be the CS wants to protect the interests of the private sector that only serve just one per cent of the population and leave out the rest,” KMPDU Secretary General Ouma Oluga said.

Lastly, the union demanded mediators be part of the important talks. The officials suggested that either Kenya Medical Association or the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) should be on the negotiation table.

The doctors strike is almost closing in on the second month.

The medics have been in and out of meetings with the Government and have insisted on implementation of a CBA signed in 2013.
