A police officer said to have been drunk, is alleged to have shot and killed an unarmed youth in Nairobi's Dandora area while attempting to calm an agitated crowd.
The victim, who was a local butcher identified as Samuel Mwangi, was among a group of onlookers that had milled around an accident scene involving a saloon car and a lorry.
Eye witnesses claimed that the drunk officer from Dandora Police Station, fired towards Mwangi killing him instantly, instead of shooting in the air.
The action sparked demonstrations by the angry youth who barricaded roads leading out of the estate, paralysing transport in the area.
However, calm has since been restored in the area and the police officer arrested, with his gun being confiscated pending arraignment in court.
