EXCLUSIVE: Sossion Speaks on Being Education Cartel Member

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General, Wilson Sossion, has finally responded to the widespread speculations of him being a member of the Education cartel involved in manipulating exam results.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, Mr Sossion accused the Government of propagating the rumours with a focus of silencing the union.

"It is mischief-making by people who do not want us to speak. Let them answer questions instead of diverting attention by calling us names, prophets of doom, cartels and what not. That is not a language you would expect from Government," Sossion said.

The KNUT Secretary-General noted that he speaks for a well-established union that represents professionals, adding that cartels ought to be taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

Sossion, who has sharply criticised the Ministry of Education for not standardising the recently released KCSE results, noted that releasing the raw marks was unfair to the students adding that standardizing of results was a process carried out around the globe.

"You cannot shift measurement methods and disadvantage Kenyan students whereas all other students around the world are subject to a specific universal method of awarding grades. Once you get the raws marks standardization is a method of treating the raw marks so that you translate it into a grade. This is even done in universities.

"You cannot subject students to one uniform system where a student who has scored 70 percent in Physics has the same grade with another with 70 percent in History or CRE or English," Sossion told this news website.

The KNUT boss further remarked that "the two-man-show by the Ministry of Education and the Exam Council, KNEC, will destroy this country."

In the interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Sossion warned that if their demands were not met, they would invite experts to prove to the ministry that it is wrong not to standardize exam results.

"We are going to escalate this thing to experts, professors in measurements to give their opinion and they will realise we are right, You cannot make this matter political and brand people cartels every time they challenge you," Sossion concluded.
