Former Minister Linked to Cartel Illegally Siphoning Water

A group of powerful individuals claimed to have been benefiting from illegal water connections have been busted.

The syndicate has allegedly been siphoning Sh5 million worth water aevery month from the Mzima pipeline.

Coast Water Services Board (CWSB) chairman Granton Samboja has said the group is comprised of a Somali rancher, a former Cabinet minister, a ranch in Voi, a hotelier and a provincial administrator, the Star reports.

The syndicate is said to have been discovered following a joint operation between the CWSB, Taita Taveta Water and Sewerage Company (Tavevo).

Samboja has noted that out of the 150,000 cubic metres of water supplied in Taita Taveta county, only 75,000 cubic meters can be accounted for.

It is claimed that Taveta Water and Sewerage Company is unable to pay its own water bills to CWSB since most of the water they are supplied with disappears into private individuals’ farms not on the board’s records.

The chairman has further stated that investigations will be carried out to establish whether employees from the CWSB and Tavevo are involved in the scam.
