Hardcore Female Prisoner Escapes

Police in Embu County are in hot pursuit of a female prisoner who dramatically escaped from the Embu GK Prison on Thursday.

32-year-old Caroline Wanjiru is said to have fled from the prison after disguising herself and sneaking out with a group of inmates who were going to a farm, before disappearing into thickets.

Prison warders manning Wanjiru said that they identified her uniform since she wore a Special Watch (SW) garb, which was found near the prison fence.

Prison and Administration Police (AP) officers immediately launched a manhunt for the suspect from Thursday night and spent the better part of Friday, unsuccessfully traversing neighbouring Kirinyaga County.

Officers from the prison described the escapee as a loner who kept to herself and didn't even receive any visitors while serving her sentence.

Ms Wanjiru was serving a six-month jail term for failing to appear before Embu court to answer to charges of stealing a gun from an Administration Police camp.

She is said to have spent a night with an officer at Itabua Police Station where she sneaked away with a Ceska pistol and 20 bullets. The gun was later recovered in one of the hotels in Embu town.

In January, officers at Kamiti Maximum Prison thwarted a prison break organized by two inmates who had previously escaped from Shimo la Tewa correctional facility.
