Heavy Security for Convict Who Killed Cell Mate During Court Appearance

The convict from King'ong'o GK Prison in Nyeri County, who was accused of brutally clobbering his cell mate to death, was arraigned in court.

Peter Gachau was taken to the Nyeri Law Courts, under tight security, to face murder charges.

He was escorted by a prominent security team of prison warders, who sought to protect him from possible threats from the public as well as a possible escape.

The inmate is said to have killed his cell mate, Shem Mugambi, after the two disagreed over Sh 70,000 they had fraudulently acquired through mobile transfer.

The warders even used raincoats to shield the convict and suspect from the glare of journalists' cameras.

By the time journalists were realizing that the suspect and warders had eluded them, they were long gone.

Gachau did not answer to the charges as the prosecution requested 14 days for investigations.

The hearing of the case was scheduled for September 1.

He was serving a life sentence for robbery with violence, before commiting the alleged subsequent crime.

The deceased inmate, Mugambi, had been serving a 15 year term for rape.
