Here's Why There Are No More Colleges Upgrading to Universities

The conversion of colleges into universities, has been halted despite the government's directive that each county ought to have a university.

The move comes amid concerns of depreciating quality of education offereed by tertiary level institutions.

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, explained that the government will not allow any more upgrading due to a number of issues arising from what most colleges are rushing towards.

Prof Kaimenyi was on Tuesday speaking in a meeting with officials from various universities and other stakeholders in higher education, held at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

He warned that most of the colleges are not equipped to meet the needs of a fully fledged university, yet politicians were putting pressure on the institution leaders to expand them.

As such, the upgrading will only be considered if the institutions meet laid-down requirements, especially on available manpower.

Technicians in the colleges will also have to undergo training before the expansion of an institution.

Kaimenyi also said that the ministry is working on policies to ensure that all senior management positions in universities represent the face of Kenya, and not just one ethnic group, as is the case in some institutions of higher learning.

Concerns have been raised in the past regarding high level of Nepotism and ethnicity in the country's Public and Private versities.
