High Court Extends Voter Registration to February 19

The High Court on Thursday extended the ongoing mass voter registration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to February 19 at 6pm.

Judge Chacha Mwita, while ruling on a case filed by activist Okiya Omtata, directed that registration at the constituency level will continue until May.

"In order to give any would-be potential voter to register, the respondent is hereby directed to continue with the drive until February 19 at 6 pm," directed Mwita.

Omtata had presented the case asking the court to extend the exercise until two months prior to the August 8 Election to allow more Kenyans to be enlisted.

On Tuesday, the court had extended the registration timeline from February 14 as had been set by IEBC to 16th pending the hearing and determination of the activist's case.

Omtata argued that the law required the exercise to continue until May 7 so that additional people especially those living far from registration centres could get time to get registered.

The polls body, however, objected to the application citing strict timelines and financial burden caused by the extension claiming that the two additional days had it cost close to Sh80 Million.

In his ruling, the judge observed the court could not agree to Omtata's May date citing financial and logistical implications.
