How Courageous Form Two Student Saved His Friend From StephJoy Fire

15 year old George Njenga was deep asleep when the 1 am Monday fire broke out at StephJoy Boys High School.

He was woken up by shouts of other students as they tried to put out the fire that was quickly razing down two dormitories.

He quickly joined the efforts of fellow students in trying to stop the fire.

As students were let out of the locked dormitory, Njenga saw his classmate Zachary Njoroge lying on the ground, screaming for help.

Zachary was hurt and could not move having fallen down in the stampede that ensued.

Njenga narrated to The Nation how he covered himself in a wet sheet and rushed to pull out his friend.

Zachary was rushed to the nearby Tigoni Sub-County Hospital and later transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital with 95 per cent body burns.

As of yesterday, doctors said he was critical condition, but thanks to the bravery of Njenga, he had a fighting chance.

Njenga and his classmates however did not manage to save every one.

Ian Kamau and Edwin Mugo who were Njenga's classmates, died in the fire.
