IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati Warns NASA Against Setting Up Parallel Tallying Center

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Friday sent a stern warning to the National Super Alliance (NASA) principals who had declared that they would set up a parallel tallying centre during the August 8 General Election.

Addressing the press in Nairobi, Chebukati cautioned the Opposition against such a move stating the electoral commission was the only one constitutionally mandated to announce results and declare winners.

He asserted that the centre was not necessary since any results coming from it would not be recognised.

“The parallel vote tallying centre that the Opposition has proposed is not recognised in law and whatever comes out of it will not make a difference," he stated.

The same was reiterated by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale who lashed out at NASA noting that its intentions were illegal.

"The only tallying centre recognised by the constitution, the election laws and the IEBC act is the tallying center of the IEBC," Duale told Jubilee supporters in Naivasha.

NASA principals including Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula on Friday held a rally in Mathare estate, Nairobi, where they disclosed their plan.

Led by Wiper chief Musyoka, they questioned why the polls body had cancelled a tender for the supply of an integrated elections management system.
