IEBC Explains CORD's Registration Mix-Up Claims

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed allegations that some voters appear in their register yet they had never registered before.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an IEBC official explained that such a situation was not possible since every voter's records must have their photograph and biometric details.

According to the official, there are no two individuals possessing the same biometrics, therefore it is not possible for their details to be in IEBC records without having been registered.

The officer admitted that some people on their register had the same Identity Card numbers, since it was a common occurrence in the country, therefore could not form basis for making the allegations.

“ID numbers are shared in Kenya even with the Registrar of Persons. You must have used your photo and fingerprints to register with us so that is not possible,” she explained.

The electoral body was responding after the Opposition leaders lined up six individuals who claimed to have been denied registration, after their ID card numbers matched those of other people already registered.

IEBC assured that it would issue a number through which all voters who will have registered by the end of the exercise on March 15, will confirm their registration details.

“Immediately after voter registration ends, we shall give out a number to confirm those details. Confirmation of register (including those those registered) comes after we have compiled all data,” the official affirmed.
