IEBC Rejects to Extend Party Nomination Deadline

The Independent  Electoral boundaries Commission on Sunday rejected requests by political parties to extend the party nomination deadline indicating that all parties should conclude their nomination process by the April 26

Speaking during a presser, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati reiterated that all the party primaries should be concluded within the stipulated timelines.

“Some political parties had requested, during the meeting, for an extension of the party primary timelines…however, after deliberations, the commission directs political parties to complete their nominations within the stipulated gazetted timelines,” he stated

He further indicated that all the parties had until May 10 to solve all disputes that would come up during the nomination process.

Mr Chebukati further directed the political parties should use their membership list during the nomination process and that the 2013 IEBC register should only be used as a reference point on polling stations.

“The commission wishes to emphasise that it has not shared the 2017 IEBC register with any political party,” he alluded.

He further urged the parties to ensure the nomination process would be free and fair and warned aspirants that they would face sanctions if they fail to abide to the electoral law.

“Party leaders should also come out to underscore the importance of peaceful violence free nominations,”

“They should commit to ensure free and fair primaries including ensuring that polling stations are opened early, sufficient election material are available and the issue of election malpractice are avoided,” he stated.

Mr Chebukati was speaking after a meeting with top political party officials.
