IEBC Selection Panel Nominates Wanyonyi Chebukati and Tukero Ole Kina for IEBC Chair Position

The selection panel mandated with choosing new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners has nominated two candidates for the Chairperson's position.

The panel has selected Mombasa-based lawyer Wanyonyi Chebukati and Tukero Ole Kina as the probable candidates to replace outgoing boss Issack Hassan.

According to the selection panel, the nominees will then be forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta to chose one candidate, who will then be vetted by parliament for approval.

At the same time, the panel presented the names of nine individuals who, if approved, will serve as the new commissioners and will oversee the 2017 General Election.

The announcement was made at a time when the country has been locked in a battle between the Jubilee and CORD factions over the controversial amendments to the electoral laws.

On Thursday, the Opposition lawmakers stormed out of the National Assembly where discussions on the proposed changes were ongoing, complaining over assault by their counterparts.

They claimed that a number of their members had been roughed up inside the Chamber adding that some Jubilee MPs were carrying guns inside the House.

The changes in contention included one allowing the electoral body to have a manual back -up in case the electronic system of voter identification fails in the upcoming polls.

The position of IEBC commissioners fell vacant when the outgoing officials handed in their resignation letters to President Kenyatta following sustained pressure from the Opposition which accused them of being partisan.
