Interior PS Karanja Kibicho Warns Kirinyaga Alcohol Traders Against Witholding IDs

The government has issued out a strong warning to bar owners in one of the Jubilee strongholds after it emerged that they were withholding nearly 20,000 Identification Cards (IDs) belonging to debtors.

Residents had complained that some of the habitual drinkers in Kirinyaga County would not be able to register as voters since their identifications were being withheld by the alcohol traders.

"Usually the residents who do not have cash give out their IDs to the bar traders as security and continue drinking on credit. When they fail to pay the debts, their IDs are withheld,” one of the residents narrated.

The Ministry of Interior, which received the complaints from concerned residents, warned that action would be taken against anyone who denied any Kenyan the chance to access his or her ID card.

"No one is allowed to keep IDs belonging to the residents for whatever reasons. Withholding IDs is tantamount to taking the law into the hands and those responsible will be dealt with severely,” Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior Karanja Kibicho warned.

Kibicho further explained that they were targeting to register an approximated 179,000 new voters in Kirinyaga.
