Journalists Attacked Losing Equipment Worth about Sh 1M

Four journalists were Tuesday attacked by County askaris in Trans Nzoia for covering demonstrations.

The journalists Leonard Wamalwa of West TV, Duncan Waswa of Imani TV, Saka Richard of Milele FM and Royal Media's David Musundi were reportedly ambushed by the County askaris as they covered the protests outside Governor Patrick Khaemba's office.

Imani TV's Waswa told The Star he was attacked with a rungu and ordered to delete the recorded clip.

The residents had reportedly taken to the streets to protest poor leadership and corruption at the Governor's office.

The county officers are also said to have destroyed video cameras and recorders belonging to the journalists which are estimated to be worth Sh1 million.

Confirming the incident, Trans Nzoia County Police Commandant Lilian Okembo has said the journalists who were on official duty have recorded a statement at the Kitale Police Station booked under the number - OB 0338/9/6/15.

According to Kenya Correspondents Association Chairman Oloo Janak journalists trying to highlight vices within the County Government are being targeted.

The comes as a latest incident of what appears to be hostilities targeted at journalists trying to expose vices happening in various parts of the country.

Last month an ODM official was caught on camera opening gunfire at journalists covering protests at a land he had allegedly grabbed.
