Jubilee Party Disqualifies Nyeri Gubernatorial Aspirant Thuo Mathenge

The Jubilee Party National Elections Board (NEB) has disqualified one of the billionaires eying the hotly-contested Nyeri gubernatorial seat, barely two days to the nominations.

Mr Thuo Mathenge, the owner of Brade Gate Poultry Industries, was kicked out of the race over questions regarding the validity of his degree.

The Elections Board rejected his candidature on grounds that the degree he obtained from a Uganda university is fraudulent.

The decision came as a surprise considering Thuo had already paid the requisite Sh500,000 for Governor aspirants and the party had even accepted his nomination papers.

Last week, the Court of Appeal had also cast doubt on the academic qualifications of the Nyeri gubernatorial hopeful.

In his ruling, Justice Wakiaga ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions to institute investigations into the validity of the degree, which Mr Mathenge alleged was awarded to him by Ugandan-based Fairland University.

“The petitioner did not attend classes at Fairland University and therefore the degree certificate awarded to him was not validly awarded… Mr Thuo Mathenge was not eligible to run for the office of governor,” the Judge stated

The judge also supported the directive to open a probe into how he got his degree.

Meanwhile, Mathenge has written to the Jubilee national appeals tribunal to contest the resolution to bar him from the race.
