Jubilee Party Elections Marred by Chaos in Nakuru, Taita Taveta

The Jubilee Party elections on Tuesday took an ugly twist as members engaged in violent confrontations after disagreeing on the list of delegates.

In Nakuru, police had to use tear gas to disperse party supporters who clashed at the former TNA offices in Milimani Estate.

Elections had been going on peacefully before a group of supporters stormed the party offices and started chanting slogans against President Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign coordinator Susan Kihika.

The angry protesters unsuccessfully tried to convince Jubilee Party Secretary-General Veronicah Maina to stop the elections, arguing that she had a preferred list of nominees.

The police were, however, able to disperse the crowd of supporters with former Nakuru Town MP David Manyara being elected Chairman of the County’s Jubilee Party branch.

In Taita Taveta, a similar chaotic mood characterised the elections which were held at a hotel in Voi town.

Party supporters from different camps engaged each other in a vicious shouting match, each accusing the other of attempting to rig the elections.

A number of party members expressed their opposition to a list of delegates produced by Taveta MP Naomi Shaaban – who was elected to spearhead the presidential campaign in the region.

"The list you have read comprises people who are not popular in the ground. It’s the same people who did not deliver during the last general election," Faustine Mghendi, a party member, protested.

The party supporters also complained that the returning officer elected to coordinate the elections did not have any form of identification from the Jubilee headquarters.
