Kenya Navy Captures 100 Suspected Terrorists

The Kenya Navy on Saturday at dawn captured and detained 106 men suspected to be terrorists deep in the sea, off Kilifi Coast.

The soldiers patrolling Kenyan waters intercepted two boats after suspecting their occupants who included Tanzanians and Kenyans.

Reports indicate that about 26 of them were Kenyans, while 80 were Tanzanian citizens claiming to be fishermen, yet the police say that no fishing gear was found in their boats.

Mombasa County Police Commander Francis Wanjohi, confirmed that the suspects were handed over to them by the Navy, and were yet to be interrogated to establish their identity and why they were in the sea at 3am.

A senior police officer told the Standard that the group was being treated as terror suspects sailing from Somalia into Kenyan waters.

Although no weapons were recovered, it is said that a multi-agency task force has been set up to establish the exact motive of the suspects.

This incident comes months after the Kenya Navy seized an Iranian ship, recovering drugs on board. The vessel's crew which included foreigners and Kenyan accomplices was detained and are currently on trial.
