Kenyan Couple in US Sentenced to 20 Years

A Kenyan couple has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for participating in a Sh275 Million fraud between the year 2006 and 2014.

Lyneth Nyabiosi Evans 50, and Willie Evans also known as James Davis 53, pleaded guilty to the charges of swindling 2.7 Million dollars from a mental health facility, almost five months after being indicted.

According to documents released by the Maryland Attorney, Ms Nyabiosi was the director of Health Information Management Department at the facility and used her influencial position to decieve her boss at Sheppard Pratt Health System.

The couple reportedly opened an entity called Information Management Solution Technology (IMST) which they disguised as an institution specialising in record management.

Unknown to Sheppard Pratt, the company was headed by James Davis, the husband to Ms Nyabiosi and through it, money was siphoned from the health facility.

The indictment further states that from 2007 to August 2014, the accused presented 150 false invoices to Sheppard Pratt requesting for payment of Sh275 Million for services that were never rendered.

FBI agents stated that upon payment the couple used the money to settle mortgage, home renovations, wire transfers to Africa, clothing and entertainment expenses.

The fraudsters were however cornered when Sheppard Prat lawyers requested to meet the IMST manager when Willie Evans came forth, presenting himself as "James Davis".

FBI revealed that the accused had however agreed to forfeit and restore the whole amount by relinquishing their properties among other things.

“The defendants face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for conspiring to commit mail fraud. U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar has scheduled sentencing for Ms Nyabiosi and Evans for February 4 and 5, 2016, respectively,” a statement by the FBI concludes.
