Kenyan Man Drove Explosive Vehicle into KDF Camp in Kulbiyow Somalia

New revelations now indicate that a Kenyan man was the suicide bomber who drove a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) into a KDF camp in Kulbiyow, Somalia, where several soldiers died.

36-year old Anwar Yogan Mwok, who died in the explosives-laden vehicle, was born in Siaya County with his family later moving to Nairobi.

"Mwok was in one of the lead vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices that targeted the KDF camp.

"He was killed by the heavy artillery fired by the KDF and died instantly," a military official told the Standard.

In Nairobi, Mwok is reported to have been playing football with the Mathare United Soccer Club prior to his conversion to Islam and recruitment into violent extremism.

He lived in Umoja estate until 2013, when he left for Somalia where he joined Jaysh Ayman, a group of largely Kenyan Al Shabaab fighters who plan and execute attacks against Kenyans.

Investigations by security agencies revealed that in Umoja, Mwoko owned a significant number of properties which he used to finance Al Shabaab activities.

Prior to the January 26 Kulbiyow attack, Mwoko and fellow Kenyans Ramadhan Kungwa and Erick Ogada were wanted by police for their involvement in terror activities. A Sh2 million bounty had been placed on their heads.
