The Kenyatta family is arguaby one of the most well connected families in Kenya.
Their links are not limited to Kenya but also in countries such as Germany (Margaret Kenyatta’s maternal relatives), Uganda (through Achola Ngobi's who is married to the current President's son), Liberia (through Kristina and Victor Pratt), as well as in the United States.
Unknown to many, President Uhuru Kenyatta has a famous cousin- an American celebrated singer who is leading protests against President Donald Trump.
Tom Morello is not only a musician but also a political activist whose father- Ng’ethe Njoroge – was a close relative to Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
Njoroge met Mary Morello (Tom’s mother and an American), in August 1963 while they were both attending a pro-democracy protest in Nairobi, Kenya.
They started a romantic relationship, and Mary became pregnant shortly after.
Upon discovering the pregnancy, Mary returned to the United States with Njoroge in November 1963 and the two married in New York City.
16 months after Tom was born, Njoroge moved back to Kenya and abandoned his parental responsibilities to his American son.
The younger Morello went on to become a famous musician and a liberal political activist.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cousin has also used his musical talents to organize some of the protests that have been held in the United States in opposition to the policies introduced by the Trump administration.
“At the rally today, it’s not just young people, it’s people of all ages. They feel this is a threat to democracy, to humanity.Trump’s ignorance in environmental science is a threat to the entire planet, and the way that’s he acted in such an ill-informed and hateful way in his first week - there’s no precedent for this in the first week of an administration,” Tom recently told a protest rally in Los Angeles.
In 2013, after President Kenyatta won the elections, Tom did not shy off from telling the world about his association with the Kenyattas, "The good news is my cousin Uhuru Kenyatta has been elected President of Kenya. The not so good news is he's also indicted for war crimes," he wrote on his Facebook page.
