KRA Freezes Mombasa Bank Accounts Over Tax Arrears Amounting to Sh173 Million

Mombasa County Government headed by Hassan Joho is facing a financial crisis after the government froze its bank accounts over tax arrears.

Through the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the bank accounts were frozen owing to a debt amounting to Sh173 Million.

KRA stated that the County had not been remitting taxes deducted from employees and suppliers.

To make matters worse for the county, Kenya Power has also disconnected power supply to county offices including Joho’s office owing to a Sh15 Million bill.

This means that normal operations at the county could be halted following the move to freeze the accounts.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Joho's communication director Richard Chacha confirmed that KRA had indeed frozen Mombasa bank accounts adding that the issue was being sorted out.

However, Chacha refuted claims that power supply to the county offices had been disconnected. Mombasa County secretary Francis Thoya also stated that they would challenge the decision in court.

Governor Joho is currently on a tour in the United States.
