Days after seven people were reportedly diagnosed with anthrax and admitted at Thika Level 5 hospital, Livestock Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Andrew K Tuimur, has now announced that there is no anthrax outbreak in Kenya.
The PS was speaking at Kericho Veterinary Investigation Laboratory where he stated that the patients who were admitted to the hospital with symptoms similar to anthrax tested negative for the disease.
Mr Tuimur, however, called out on members of the public to avoid consuming uninspected meat.
The seven people were reported to be meat loaders at the Makongeni slaughterhouse and are said to have come into contact with an infected carcass at the facility.
One patient was reported to have been scraped by a bone on his hand that later swelled and produced lesions similar to a spider bite.
Kiambu County Director of Clinical Services Dr Jacob Toro issued a widely circulated health alert after the incident.
Anthrax is typically carried by animals and human beings only contract it when one comes into contact with infected animal products.
