Man Commits Suicide to Protest Destruction of Alcohol

A man in Garissa County demonstrated his displeasure at the ongoing crackdown of illegal brews by taking his own life.

The young man jumped into the crocodile-infested River Tana from a bridge.

Witnesses say the man said he had mo reason to continue living without his drink.

Witnesses were left watching helplessly as the deceased struggled to stay afloat but the fast flowing water overpowered him.

The incident is still surreal to those who were at the scene, albeit the pair of sandals left by the man on the bridge serving as a cruel proof.

He joins the list of casualties of the nationwide crackdown against second generation alcohol in Kenya.

On Thursday, six people in Kiambu county succumbed to extreme withdrawal symptoms after they could no longer access the drinks they were dependent on.

28 others have been hospitalized and continue to receive treatment.
