The government has finally stepped in to rescue parents from alleged exploitation by Secondary School heads, after education stakeholders agreed that all schools would strictly adhere to the outlined fee guidelines.
On Tuesday, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi moved in to save the situation after parents blamed schools of charging excessive fees contrary to what was gazetted by the Ministry in February 2015.
Matiangi held a consultative meeting with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) where the latter agreed to reduce school fees.
The Minister urged parents to only pay the gazetted school fees and asked them to report cases of extra charges to the County Directors of Education, for action to be taken against individual school heads.
Speaking after the meeting, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori stated that the guidelines agreed needed to be adhered to in order to prevent confusion in the sector.
“The fee guidelines must be adhered to because if we do not do this, then we are setting schools up for anarchy and that might cause unnecessary commotion.
This comes after Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang instructed County Directors of Education to forward lists of schools overcharging parents, for disciplinary action.
These sentiments were echoed by Deputy President William Ruto who said that all school principals ignoring the government's directive would be disciplined.
