Matiang’i Orders School Principals To Issue Receipts for Free Education Funds

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has ordered all school principals to issue receipts to students for free education funds paid by the government.

Speaking in Nyamecheo, Kisii County, Dr Matiang'i stated that the move would ensure school heads don't increase fees and stick to the standard package set by the government.

"Parents should be allowed to inquire about the expenditure of any public school. We will not allow corruption in our learning institutions. We are ready to punish anybody who violates Government policies and guidelines," the no-nonsense CS affirmed.

The Education CS also urged parents to ask for the receipts and if they noticed abnormalities in the fees charged, to report the school heads with immediate effect.

Dr Matiang'i also announced that officers from Ministry of Education were investigating a school in Kisii county which was reported to have increased fees and promised to take action if the school head was found guilty.

In March 2015, the government came up with some regulations that were gazetted which set the boarding school fees at Sh53,554 per year, day schools at Sh9,374 per year and Sh37,210 annually for special schools.

Dr Matiang’i had earlier announced that principals would face dire consequences if they charged parents more money than that set by the government.
